NAMRIA took part in the 13th Session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) held at the UN Headquarters in New York City on 02-04 August 2023.

The UN-GGIM, led by UN Member States, plays a leading role in setting directions and coming up with joint decisions regarding the collection, production, and management of geospatial information based on national, regional, and global policy frameworks. This forum brings together geospatial experts and professionals from around the globe to discuss critical issues on enhancing geospatial information management, establishing cooperation and linkages, and sharing practical and technical experiences to address key global challenges.

During the opening of the 13th Session, Mr. Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, welcomed the delegates and expressed his appreciation for the UN-GGIM's strong sense of global collaboration and coordination. Speaking for the first time at the UN-GGIM, Mr. Li Junhua acknowledged the key achievements of the Committee of Experts while urging Member States to intensify efforts to strengthen and enhance the effective sharing and use of geospatial information. Mr. Li Junhua challenged the Committee of Experts to accelerate the implementation of consensus-based norms, frameworks, and guides to address the urgent need for meeting the SDG goals. He emphasized the importance of geospatial information for sustainability and resilience, highlighting the need for it to be available, accessible, and integrated for sound and robust policy formulation, decision making, and innovation.

Over 400 delegates from Member States as well as Non-Member States, entities, and organizations invited as observers, participated in this year's meeting. The 13th Session tabled 19 agenda items inclusive of the reports of the various working and expert groups, regional committees, and thematic groups on the progress of their respective work items during the inter-sessional period, matters for consideration by the Committee of Experts, and future program of work. Side events were also organized by the various working and expert groups and thematic groups at the margins of the session.
