Gender and Development | Jeffrey Quodala | 12 May 2023 | Print

In line with the celebration of the 2023 National Women's Month, NAMRIA, through its Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System, conducted two batches of gender sensitivity trainings for public high school teachers and students. The trainings were held at the NAMRIA Fort Andres Bonifacio Office, Taguig City on 29 and 30 March 2023. The teachers and students were from Western Bicutan National High School (WBNHS) of Taguig City and Benigno "Ninoy" S. Aquino High School (BNAHS) of Makati City. This writer, who is a member of the NAMRIA GAD Focal Point System, was the training resource person. He discussed various gender concepts using the module produced by the Civil Service Institute of the Civil Service Commission. He is an Information Officer from the Geospatial Information Services Division (GISD) of the NAMRIA Geospatial Information System Management Branch (GISMB).

The module was divided into four parts, namely: Introduction, Sex and Gender, MaSaLi (Magulang, Salinlahi, at Lipunan), and Manifestations of Gender Bias. Under the Sex and Gender part, stages and institutions that contribute to various gender issues were discussed comprehensively. An audiovisual presentation aptly titled "Ang mga Babae sa Ating Buhay," which was produced by HASIK for its gender seminars was also presented. HASIK, short for Harnessing Self-Reliant Initiatives and Knowledge, is a non-government organization involved in urban poor empowerment, gender development, protection of children and adolescents, and housing and livelihood projects. It was founded by the late Karina Constantino-David, a women's rights and development advocate.

Copies of the Map 101, Volume XXV issue of Infomapper were handed over to Ms. Monaliza T. Mesa of WBNHS and Ms. Perchy L. Reyes of BNAHS. Infomapper is NAMRIA's publication on surveys, mapping, and geospatial information management. Centennial calendars were given as tokens of appreciation to all teachers and students.

In closing, this writer thanked the teachers and students for their participation and support. In response, they thanked NAMRIA for inviting them to be a part of the agency's GAD activities.

Employees of GISMB, including those assigned at the Engineering Services Division of the Support Services Branch, provided documentation and logistics support. All the pictures used for this article were taken by Mr. Erwin D. Famatiga of GISD-GISMB.
