Volume XXXIV, Issue No. 17
By: Jeff N. Hunt

NAMRIA, through the Geomatics Training Center (GTC) of the Geospatial Information System Management Branch (GISMB), once again conducted an Advanced Geographic Information System (GIS) training for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) on 06-10 June 2022. The sessions were held at the Headquarters of the 300th Air Intelligence and Security Wing (AISW) in Pasay City. The training participants were four commissioned officers, five enlisted personnel, and two civilians from different units under the AISW.

The training was requested by the PAF through the 300th AISW Wing Commander, Col. Edgar C. Torres PAF (General Staff Corp) to NAMRIA Administrator, USec. Peter N. Tiangco, PhD. Administrator Tiangco is presently a member of the Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Board (MSAB) of the AISW-PAF together with NAMRIA’s Mapping and Geodesy Branch Director Ruel DM. Belen, MNSA.

Engr. Rosalyn D. Sontillanosa of the Geospatial Database Management Division (GDMD)-GISMB served as the resource speaker of the training.  Training assistance were provided by Nilca Jane F. Fabellon and this writer, who are also both from GISMB.

The creation of MSAB promotes stronger public partnerships aligned with PAF’s key policy and thrust, encourages the concept of shared responsibility of good governance, allows the continuity of policies and programs and provides expert opinion and advice on program execution within PAF and the AISW, and helps improve coherence and effectiveness in addressing diverse challenges especially in generating additional resources.

Advanced topics in GIS, including specific modules on spatial data analysis and visualization techniques were discussed during the training.  The participants completed a series of hands-on activities and assignments on site selection and optimization and multilayer raster data analysis.

Learnings from the training will be utilized specifically by the 3033rd Air Intelligence Research and Analysis Squadron (AIRAS) of the 303rd Aerial Intelligence Reconnaissance Group (AIRG) and the 307th Air Intelligence Training Squadron (AITS) under the 300th AISW. The first Basic GIS training was conducted in July 2021 through online-synchronous and asynchronous modality.
