2016 ESRI User Conference

Some NAMRIA officials and employees attended the 2016 Philippine ESRI User Conference on 23-24 February 2016 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Grand Ballroom in Ortigas, Pasig City. The annual conference was sponsored by Geodata Systems Technologies Inc. (Geodata STI), authorized distributor of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) products. NAMRIA is a user of ARCGIS Software, which is one of ESRI products.

In his welcome remarks, Geodata STI President Mr. Albert L. Morales welcomed all delegates and speakers of the event. He said that in almost every aspect of our lives, the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology plays a significant role. He underscored its use in the military, national government agencies, local government units, and organizations concerning climate change. He also talked briefly about the history between Geodata STI and ESRI.

In her presentation, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Geodata STI Ms. Francisca N. Dayrit talked about the theme of the event which is “Applying Geography Everywhere.” She discussed about the evolution of GIS and its different uses. She also said that because of the advancements in technology, GIS can now be accessed and utilized by an ordinary person.

On day 1, resource speakers from different fields of expertise presented the current state of GIS, including the recent technological advancements. Some of the topic titles were Gearing Up for the Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence Enabled Future, GIS in Mosquito-borne Diseases in the Philippines, and Applying GIS to Mines and Geosciences.
 
Day 2 involved holding of simultaneous workshops on varied insterests. The attendees were managers, project team leads, consultants, GIS enthusiasts, developers, and data analysts. It also required different levels of GIS knowledge, from basic to intermediate.

The two-day event was capped by a cocktail party where organizers, speakers, and participants had the opportunity to socialize among themselves.

NAMRIA produces topographic maps that are use as base maps for other thematic maps like land cover, land condition, land classification, cadastral, etc. In addition, we have digital data of road maps available. This data comes from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
