UP Geodetic Engineering Students top NAMRIA Mobile Application Development Contest

A team of two Geodetic Engineering students from the University of the Philippines Diliman earned the First Place in the concluded NAMRIA Mobile Application Development Challenge. The two students are Christian G. Candido and Lou Lerren C. Curacha.

The competition was part of NAMRIA’s celebration of the annual World Hydrography Day and the agency’s 30th Anniversary. The competition was arranged to involve students in the improvement of delivery of NAMRIA’s products and services. 
 
The application of the winning group is titled NAMRIA INTEL (Information, Navigation, Topography, Evacuation and Location). The application shows the important information for navigators such as depths and location of light houses. It also plots on the chart the location of hazards as reported in the Notice to Mariners.
 
Philippine Science High School Students 2nd Placer in NAMRIA Mobile App Contest

The 2nd place was earned by a group of students from the Philippine Science High School – Main Campus. The group is composed of Philip Luis D. Tuason III, Ericka Marie D. Torio and Mirella Arguelles. Their application is titled Horizon.
 
Many groups have initially registered for the competition but only the two groups were successful in developing mobile applications within the one-month contest period.
 
The UP students received cash prize of 30,000 Pesos while the Philippine Science High School students received 18,000 Pesos. DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, NAMRIA Administrator Peter N. Tiangco, Deputy Administrator Jose C. Cabanayan, Jr., and Deputy Administrator Efren P. Carandang handed out plaques and certificates to the two teams during the awarding ceremony, which was held during NAMRIA’s celebration last 30 June 2017.
