Culminating activity of 18-Day Campaign to End VAW held
News & Event(s) | Jeff Aguillon | 15 December 2016 | Print

NAMRIA held a culminating activity for the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) on 12 December 2016 at its Fort Bonifacio Grounds.  The campaign, observed annually from November 25 to December 12, raises awareness about VAW as an issue of national concern. This year’s theme “VAW-Free Community Starts with Me” shifted the campaign to positive advocacy messaging by encouraging everyone to commit to ending VAW and to actively participate in a joint pursuit to have a VAW-free community.

Several activities were implemented by NAMRIA to support the 18-day campaign period, and these were: 1) Inspirational Talk by Ms. Juliet Torcelino Van Ruyven; 2) Survey on the Acceptance of Women in the Commissioned Service; 3) participation in the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW Kick-off Ceremony of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) at the Philippine International Convention Center; 4) Gender Sensitivity Training for new and job-order employees; and 5) awareness building and cascading of Republic Act 7877 or the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995 led by Atty. Jessie M. Racimo held in Fort Bonifacio; San Nicolas; and Subic, Zambales Offices.

Director Rijaldia N. Santos, NAMRIA GAD Focal  Person, gave the opening remarks for the culminating activity and she thanked all who attended and supported the learning and development sessions. She enjoined everyone to continue to support GAD activities and, in their own little way,  be an advocate of anti-violence against women and children. She also mentioned that according to the United Nations, the color orange represents hope, for a future free from violence against women and girls.

Looking to individualize and make the people “own” the campaign, the PCW sought to personify the “Me” in the 2016 theme, “VAW-free community starts with me.”  This was done by providing messages of  commitments in achieving a VAW-Free community. Representatives from the five NAMRIA braches read the commitments which took the perspectives of the following: woman/girl, man/boy, government agency, barangay, private sector, and academe/training institutions.

"Oranging" of Hand led by DA Cabanayan, Jr.

A commitment ritual called “Oranging” of Hand, wherein the participants swore an oath to end VAW, was led by Deputy Administrator Jose C. Cabanayan Jr. To close the activity, Engr. Rosalyn Sontillanosa of the Geospatial Information System Management Branch and Ms. Rose Arianne E. Borlaza of the Resource Data Analysis Branch rendered a song number titled “One Woman.“ The song was written back in 2013 for UN Women when it celebrated its mission and work to improve women’s lives around the world. The culminating activity was hosted by Ms. Xenia R. Andres of the Support Services Branch.
