In Memoriam… former NAMRIA Administrator Diony A. Ventura
By: Maria Romina D. Pe Benito
NAMRIA bids farewell to its fourth full-fledged administrator, Retired Police Director Diony Alvaro Ventura, MNSA who passed away on 11 August 2018.  He was the first former police official to be the head of the agency.  He was NAMRIA’s administrator from 2002 to 2010.

Diony Alvaro Ventura

(1945-2018)

As NAMRIA administrator, he spearheaded the work of the agency to address several top priority concerns.  These include: the completion of the Philippine Geodetic Network for establishing a common reference system for all surveys and mapping activities in the country; the continuous production of large- and medium-scale base maps for use in geohazard mapping, covering areas that are highly vulnerable to natural hazards and calamities; the continuous survey of unclassified public lands to be able to fulfill the government’s commitment of providing areas for development whether for agricultural, industrial, housing, tourism and for other purposes; and the redefinition of the archipelagic baselines of the country in compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea that enabled the submission for an extended continental shelf in the Benham Rise, now Philippine Rise Region.

Among the key policy directions for NAMRIA he set in his administration were the continuing development and enhancement of the agency’s existing capabilities, priority equipment acquisition, and maintenance of discipline in the organization. He strongly emphasized in his leadership the need for the unity and hard work of the agency’s officials and employees, especially to fulfill the agency‘s commitment to the priority programs of the national government and DENR.
