BFAR-UN FAO collaborative project taps NAMRIA expertise in GIS Mapping
By: Jeff Hunt

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in collaboration with the United Nation-Food and Agriculture Organization(UN-FAO) tapped the services of NAMRIA for the conduct of Geographic Information System (GIS) training using QGIS application. The training stemmed from the request of the National Project Coordinator and BFAR-Aquaculture Division (AD) through OIC-Chief Roy C. Ortega. The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed on 31 January 2018 and the training was held at the BFAR-National Inland Fisheries Technology Center (NIFTC), Tanay-Rizal on February 05-09, 2018.

The OIC-Chief of Aquaculture Division Mr. Roy C. Ortega giving the opening remarks

The purpose of the training was to capacitate BFAR personnel in decision-making, program/project monitoring and evaluation, and risks and suitability analysis in support of BFAR’s project dubbed as “Aquaculture Resources Mapping and Development Planning through ICT-Based Solutions.” The project aims to develop and implement interventions that address the lack of systematic data on available aquaculture areas for production. These data will help planners and decision makers develop intuitive financial and investment mechanisms to boost the sector’s growth and promote sustainable management practices.
