NAMRIA Administrator Dr. Peter N. Tiangco, CESO I was the Guest of Honor for the Retirees and Reservists Day held at the Naval Combat Engineering Brigade (NCEBde) Headquarters, Bonifacio Naval Station, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on 12 July 2017. The event was part of the preparation of the 50th Founding Anniversary of the NCEBde on 15 July 2017.

The Naval Combat and Engineering Brigade or more popularly known as Seabees, is tasked with combat engineering and amphibious construction in support of fleet-marine operations. The Seabees moniker came from the initial C.B. which means construction brigade. It performs construction of roads, bridges, and other vital infrastructures under combat conditions. The Seabees also performs rehabilitation and clearing of piers and harbors, and salvage works.

Mapping and Geodesy Branch Director Ruel DM. Belen, MNSA was given a Military Merit Medal during the ceremonies for his contributions to the NCEBde as a reserve Commander of the Philippine Navy. For the past years, NAMRIA, through the initiative of Director Belen, has been supporting the Seabees in their technological advancement through knowledge sharing and holding of hands-on drills on surveying methods. The Seabees personnel received Map Data, training programs in GPS Survey, and Basic and Advanced GIS from NAMRIA.

NAMRIA also donated five Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS) receiver units to the Seabees during the event. In the hand-over ceremonies, a deed of donation was signed by Administrator Tiangco and Commodore Francisco O. Gabudao Jr., Commander of the NCEBde.

During his speech, Administrator Tiangco related the occasion to the recent celebration of NAMRIA’s 30th Anniversary where DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu was present. He narrated the story of Secretary Cimatu, a former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, wherein the importance of reliable and accurate map was tested in a battle fight with the insurgents in Mindanao during the Secretary’s time as a young lieutenant. The Administrator also highlighted the recent participation of NAMRIA in the installation of Philippine flag in the shallowest area of the Philippines Rise, and in the Interagency Marine Scientific Research 2017 in the West Philippine Sea to support maritime activities in the area. Administrator Tiangco also bared that NAMRIA led the preparation and defense of the Philippine’s claim to an extended continental shelf on the Philippine Rise (formerly Benham Rise) region which led to an additional 13.5 million hectares of seabed under our maritime jurisdiction. He thanked, in behalf of all NAMRIA employees, the retirees and reservists for their exemplary nationalism and invaluable service to the nation.

A military parade was conducted by the Honor Battalion of the Seabees with Administrator Tiangco participating in the ceremonial “trooping the line.” The event was also attended by retired officers and former Commanders of the Seabees, retirees, reservists, and their families.
